CAN I HAVE A BRA THAT FITS?
YES, YOU CAN!!!
(assembled with permission from original material contained in The Bra-Makers Manual,
authored by Beverly Johnson)

Statistics indicate that seven out of ten women are not wearing a bra that fits properly, providing both support and comfort. I’m going to let you in on a few secrets – the secrets of proper bra fit!

First of all, though: improper fit. It’s uncomfortable, it results in clothes that do not hang and drape properly, it can result in restriction to circulation in the breast and that can lead to health problems. And again, it’s uncomfortable, uncomfortable, uncomfortable!

The primary function of a bra is first to provide support and then to cover the breasts. Some bras do one job well; some do the other. We want and need bras that do both and are comfortable to wear. It is the band of the bra that provides the support, it is not the straps!

When a bra is supportive, the cups fit all the way around each breast, containing the breast tissue and keeping them from – well, you know -- sagging. The band should be wide enough to hold the cups in place and not ride up in the back. The straps should not twist or dig in to the shoulders.

In your search for good fit, try to analyze each bra, moving systematically to each of the three elements of the cups, the band and the straps, keeping the following criteria in mind:

Cups:

  • The fabric of both the upper and lower cup should fit all the way around each breast, keeping the breast inside the cup and with no bulges of breast tissue or skin out of the bra;
  • Should provide support for the breast through all of your daily activities;
  • Should not rub the skin of your chest wall directly under the breast;
  • If wires are part of the construction of the bra, they should not poke under the arm or rub your skin under the breast;

Band:

  • Should be wide enough to hold the cups in place, feel supportive around your back and not roll up when you move around;
  • Should be tight enough to provide some tension on the band fabric as this helps your bra to do its job of providing support.

Straps:

  • Should lie comfortably on your shoulders, without digging in;
  • Should not fall off your shoulders as you go about your daily activities;
  • Should be adjusted to hold the breasts at a comfortable height, but remembering that the straps do not provide the primary support in the bra, they only keep the upper cup fabric in place.
